1993: the fire on the Chapel Bridge – and the result

During the night of 17th August 1993, a fire broke out on the Chapel Bridge, which was the oldest wooden bridge in Europe at that time. There were 110 paintings hanging in the gabled roof of the Chapel Bridge at the time. On the morning of 18th August 1993, the remains of 47 paintings were salvaged. Thirty were restored between 1994 and 1998. Today, they are hanging in the gables of both bridgeheads once again.
